Social Media for Schools – Troy Lunt and Cori Flanigan – Board Room B – Session Resources/Links
This session is designed to bring an awareness to the growing trends of Social Media in our schools. This becomes an important topic as teachers adopt creative ways for including these services into their curriculum. Equally important is educating all staff of the ways students use these services to communicate outside of class. Social Media provides great opportunities for people to connect and share information, however, it also provides platforms that can be very concerning due to both intended and unintended downsides. Awareness of these social media services are key, and, in an environment and era where new services are being made available on a (sometimes) weekly basis, being able to stay on top of these technologies is most critical. Social Media has grown in vast proportions and knowing of the signs to look for will help staff remain aware of these new and trending apps. This session will cover the dozen (or so) of the most common Social Media services and will delve into those used most frequently by students in positive as well as potentially harmful ways.
