SEDC and USOE are offering classes to teachers who wish to acquire a Reading Endorsement

Content Area Literacy-EDRG5320

 

The purpose of this graduate-level course is to help practicing teachers develop an in-depth understanding of the research findings, issues, principles, and practices related to exemplary, research-based literacy instruction in the content areas. The course topics include the use of print and non-print texts throughout the K-12 curriculum. The course will prepare teachers to enable students to engage, understand, analyze, and create text related to science, social science, mathematics, art, music, etc. Teachers will develop understanding of how to investigate and recognize content-specific literacy in teaching and when participating in the literacy of a specific discipline.

Instructor

LaRayne Brown graduated from SUU with a BS Degree in Elementary Education.  She also received her MS of Education Degree from SUU.  She has a Level II Reading Endorsement.  She has been in the teaching profession for 27 years, and has taught 2nd, 4th, 5th, and 6th grades. LaRayne is currently the Beaver Count School District Reading Director and Literacy Coach for Belknap Elementary.  She has experience in teaching all the reading classes required by the Utah State Office of Education for the Level I Reading Endorsement, and works an Adjunct Professor for SUU and Weber State University. She was part of the USOE Common Core Alignment Committee and helped review the new SAGE test.

The classes will be offered via IVC (Interactive Video Conference) at the following locations (subject to change)

Garfield District Office
Millard District Office

Dates and Times

Classes will begin on Tuesday, March 25, 2014 and run for 10 consecutive weeks from 4:00 PM to 8:30 PM

Costs

Participants are required to pay a nominal fee for credits.
